Firstly, on behalf of Open LA21 Project participant companies, I would like to thank everyone for coming today. My name is Masato Muto, Open LA21 Project member and staff of aloka co.,LTD. It is a great pleasure for me to make a presentation on Open LA21 Project.
Today's sub title is Up-to-date Total laboratory automation system available with module combination.
Now let start my presentation.

Today, my presentation consist of three parts.
First is what about Open LA21 Project. I review a brief history of Open LA21 Project form now.
Second is introduction of Open LA21 modules. Now we just launch the First Open LA21 modules. I explain these modules in this session.
Third is Open LA21 Project future plan. I explain our future vision in this session.
Now start my first part.

In September 1999, Open LA21 Project had started by three companies ALOKA, A&T and JEOL.
In this year, TOYOBO and NIPPON CHEMIPHAR had joined to Open LA21 who agree the concept.
In 2000, TOSOH had joined to Open LA21project.
Also, Open LA21 Project technical section was established first Open LA21 standards. This standards describe mechanical and electrical standards based on well known standards such as NCCLS and JSCC.
We hope these standards is the important purpose of standardization such as "Open Architecture" to realize "plug-and-play" laboratory automation system.
In 2001, HORIBA and TechnoMedica had joined to Open LA21 Project. Open LA21 Project technical section was established first Open LA21 Guideline.
In 2002, We exhibit prototype Open LA21 automation models.
In 2003, We exhibit Pre-Production Open LA21 automation models.
In this year, we start to install Open LA21 modules.

This slide shows Open LA21 Project participant companies.
Up to this year, eight companies join this project.

This slide shows the road map.
From the beginning of Open LA21 project, it already pass four years and along with the road map, we are in the final stage.
In these years, the project is still on the schedule.
In the alliance of eight companies, it can say miracle that each company perform there own development on schedule.

From now, I explain belief introduction about Open LA21 standards and guidelines.

This slide shows the list of Open LA21 mechanical and electrical standards. Open LA21 Project technical section established 11 mechanical standards and 6 electrical standards.

You can check and download all standards and guidelines from Web site.

This slide shows mechanical standard number 3 named feed section of analyzer. This standard is revised 3 times.
This standard describe alignment area of the feed section of the automated analyzer connected with the transportation unit of the specimen transportation system that is used in the clinical laboratory.
This standard is defined physical position of sampling point on the transportation line and location about water inlet, power supply cabling.
The newest revise is eliminated the description of exhaust fan position.

This slide shows electrical standard number 3 named regarding system starting.
This standard is revised 2 times.
Open LA21 system is the combination of many modules.
The system is needed to treat as a one huge analyzer.
This standard describe remote circuit to be used to power start of each modules in the system.
Each module shall start by receiving a remote control signal called the START-UP signal and after start each module send back signal called CONNECT.
This standard is described signal type, connector shape, pin assignment and recommend circuit diagram.

This slide shows electrical standard number 6 named specifications for ID read of the specimen or the carrier at the time of sampling.
This standard is new one.
Each analyzer to connect transportation line requires ID information at the time of sampling.
This standard describe specification such as communication between ID read media and analyzer, connector shape.

Open LA21 technical section established some guidelines.
The guideline is only for guide to design modules and not restrict those company to intend a new module.
Guideline 1 and 2 describe about water specification to use the system.
Especially, analyzing modules need some water, so this guideline shows water quality, pressure and size of supply entrance.
Detail is shown in slide.

Guideline 3 to 5 describe about outer shape and colors of system.
To the uniformity of whole system, outer shape and colors need almost same.
This guideline shows coloring and detail of outer shape.
Each module want to use same parts looks like wave shape panel.

From now, I start my second part.
This part, I show Open LA21 modules that now in presence.

This slide is same road map I show before.
Along with the road map, this year is the year to launch Fully Integrated Open Module Automation.
Open LA21 Project is now starting a installation of our first module systems. This fact is the evidence that Open LA21 Project is just on the roadmap.

From now, I introduce the specification of modules.

The first module is sample loading module SL01 made by A&T.
To load master samples, put the sample tube in 5 position rack and set these racks in the tray.
This module also has STAT sample entry.

The second module is Automated centrifuge module ACU-710 made by ALOKA.
The master sample to need centrifugation is transferred this module and make centrifuge as decided parameter.
When centrifuge is finished, the master sample return to transportation line to process other module.
This unit have 2 rotors and use both rotor simultaneously.

This module is Automated De-capping module ARU-730 made by ALOKA.
The master sample to need de-capping is transferred this module and remove the cap.
ALOKA provide two different De-capping module depend on the cap type.
One is for rubber, and over cap type and other for thin film type.

This module is Aliquot module APU-750 made by ALOKA.
This module makes some daughter sample from master sample.
The aliquot method is used disposable tip.
Every daughter sample is attached bar-code label to recognizes master ID and other information.

This module is buffer module BF01 made by A&T.
Open LA21 system has two different type of buffer modules.
This module is used for master and daughter sample to wait before test is performed.

This is Enzyme Immunoassay module AIA-1800LA made by TOSOH.
This module is based Fluorometric enzyme immunoassay and perform automated continuous random access method.
The maximum throughput is 180 test per hour.
The reagent capacity is up to 31 trays and this number equivalent to 31 analyses and 620 tests.

This is Clinical Biochemistry module JCA-BM6010LA made by JEOL.
This module is based on minimal requirements for sample volume and water consumption, so this module maximizing operation efficiency.
The maximum throughput is 800 test per hour.

This module is buffer module BR01 made by A&T.
This module is used for master and daughter sample to wait before retesting.

The conveyer module FC01 is made by A&T.
This module is main part of transportation system.
Master and daughter samples are carried from one module to other by using tube holder.
The conveyer module have different type of length to make suitable combination.
Also, up to 5 modules can connect one conveyer.

This is general purpose connection module GC01 made by A&T.
This module connect many kinds of modules to conveyer module.
Master and daughter samples are carried by conveyer module and if specific sample to move sampling point.
This module have different type of length to adjust depth from transportation line to analyzer.

This is unloading and sorting module UL01 made by A&T.
To unload master and daughter samples, pick up one sample form transportation line in 5 position rack.
This module also can sort sample tubes such as masters and daughters.

Open LA21 module system can connect not only new module type analyzer but also present type analyzer.
This is typical layout to combine new and present analyzers.

To close this section, I introduce the merits of Open LA21 module systems.

First merit is Open LA21 system realize fully automated system from front end to analysis. I introduce many modules and this can make various combination including front end to analysis.
Second merit is Open LA21 system realize plug and play concept.
Standardize mechanical and electrical standard may perform plug and play and based on HL-7 data communication procedure, communication method is also standardize and it realize plug and play.
Third merit is Open LA21 modules is controlled form one control console. The whole system looks like one analyzer.
Last merit is Open LA21 modules realize flexible layout just fit the facility.

From now, I start my last part.
This part, I show Open LA21 Project future plan.

The first future plan is advance.
To complete the modules to be connected, we need more analysis modules such as cell counter, coagulation, urinalysis.
When new module will released, it is easy to add new module in present system.
To advance present analysis modules such as Biochemical and immunoassay.
the main point of advance is increase process speed and complete measuring items.

Next future plan is expansion.
Based on Module Systems, Open LA21 Project will creates the total Laboratory support.
One is the field called sample preparation. This field is also important for total laboratory automation.
The other is the field called post analysis such as sample storage and so on.
The last is called data management.
Data management covered these sample preparation, real analysis and post analysis.

This is last slide of my presentation.
Open LA21 Project will exhibit module system in AACC exhibition at Los Angels form July 27 to 29.
From September 30 to October 1st, the module system will exhibit JSCLA at pacifico Yokohama.
