The Lab Automation 2002

Open LA21 Project - For Open Modular Automation (2nd -Progress- Report)

Akira Igarashi (A&T)

Slide#1Slide#1 Thank you chairman.
This is the final session of this morning and this is the last subject to get gorgeous lunch.
This is the 2nd presentation of Open LA21 Project follows LA2000, here in Palm Springs. Today, I would like to introduce you a progress of the project such as Standard and the development of Module Unit as a representative of Open LA21 Project Member.

Slide#2
Slide#2
Here are the missions of Open LA21 Project.
There are several of concept on Laboratory Automation such as Front End Automation, Work Cell and Total Lab Automation. We believe that the Modular Automation would be the core and common concept of them.
For instance, either Front End Automation, Work Cell or TLA could be a one variation of Modular Automation.
But for this, Modular Automation should be Open Architecture.
Then, customer would be able to chose suitable Modular Automation with their need flexibly.

Slide#3
Slide#3
Here is the image of Modular Automation.
The purpose of the Project is the earliest development of various modules by multiple manufacture. It is difficult to line-up such kind of various modules within short period by one company.

Slide#4Slide#4
Here is the Road Map, we have presented 2 years ago.
We are almost on the schedule. Today, I would like to introduce some of the progress of our project, Standards and Prototype of Analysis Modules.

Slide#5Slide#5
Now, our member of Open LA21 Project becomes 10 companies. The participants of the project has been increasing steadily including customers as an advisor.

Slide#6Slide#6
Basically, Open LA21 Project is based on NCCLS Standards...
and We are trying to decide some more detail points to realize True, Practical, Plug-and-play Modular Automation system with open environment.

Slide#7
Slide#7
NCCLS Standard is consisting of 5 categories. For the Laboratory Automation System, AUTO 1 and AUTO 5 are strongly related to it.

All, through Auto 1 to 5 have approved already.

Slide#8
Slide#8
Open LA21 Standard is consisting of Mechanical Standard,Electrical Standards, andData Communication Standard.
You can see the detail of Open LA21 Standard through our Homepage. It may be boring but I would like to introduce some of them. Please be patience for a while.

Slide#9
Slide#9
We have finished almost of our work on Mechanical Standard. Mechanical Standard is consisting of those 8 categories. I would like to show you some example.

Slide#10
Slide#10
So we have finished almost of work on Mechanical Standards. And we are now working for some detail issue which are not the mandatory such as Designs, Image and Operation.

Slide#11
Slide#11
Such as the size of covers or space between floor and cover. That will influence to the image of the system.

Slide#12
Slide#12
Also, it is important to adjust to NCCLS Standards in terms of Height. We are also discussing Water Supply and Drain System for Analyzer.

Slide#13
Slide#13
Next is the Electrical Standard. We also have finished almost of work for those 6 categories on Electrical Standard.

Slide#14
Slide#14
This is the standard for Power Supply. AC200V will be supplied through the Sample Transportation Line to each modules.

Slide#15
Slide#15
Module Unit shall be grounded each other though the steel covers of the units.

Slide#16
Slide#16
Start Up and Shut Down of the whole unit should be made by one button. Therefore, each Module Unit must apply to the Remote Control from the STS. This is the example of Control Circuit using Photo Coupler.

Slide#17
Slide#17
This is the standard for Switch Symbols.
In Open LA Standard, multiple vender will supply the multiple unit. But the Operation must be instructed by the same expression. We are going to use IEC Standard.

Slide#18
Slide#18
For the Electrical Safety, it is decided in IEC61010-1. And Open LA Standard will follow it.

Slide#19
Slide#19
For EMC, each Module Unit should be applied to these Emission and Immunity defined by IEC.

Slide#20
Slide#20
And it shall also be applied to UL and CSA Certificate.

Slide#21
Slide#21
The last topics on the standard is Data Communication.
We are planning to incorporate HL-7 which has been widely accepted as the communication standard. HL-7 Japan Edition has approved by Working Group of JAHIS on June 21, 2001. It has also presented on their Homepage and will be released as Online Regulation Ver. 2.0.

Slide#22
Slide#22
In the next session, I would like to introduce you a progress of R&D of each modules.

Slide#23
Slide#23
This is the Pre-Analytical Module Developed by ALOKA.

Slide#24
Slide#24
High-Sensitive Immunoassay Module jointly developed by TOYOBO, Nippon Chemiphar and A&T.

Slide#25
Slide#25
High Sensitive Immuno-assay Module developed by TOSOH.
Now, as you see, there is keeping fair competition even among Open LA21 Project inside.

Slide#26
Slide#26
Clinical Chemistry Module developed by JEOL.
A&T is also planning to develop the Chemistry Module.

Slide#27
Slide#27
Urine Sedimentation Module developed by TOYOBO and A&T.

Slide#28
Slide#28
This is the Top View of Open LA Modules.
Blue part is the Sample Track Line developed by A&T. Sample Transportation Line runs the back of Analyzer. And sample will be taken by Outside Sampling by the Analyzer. The analyzer based on Open LA21 Standard can be used as Stand Alone without any modification. Non Standardized analyzer can be connected to the Track Line if it is applied to Outside Sampling. But in this case, foot print will become larger because it needs a maintenance space both side of the analyzer. The Sample Transportation System can be a Single Tube or Rack Transportation.

Slide#29
Slide#29
We have exhibited the prototype of several Open LA Modules in JSCLA last year. Here is the Rack Buffer Unit, Urine Sedimentation Module and High Sensitive Immunoassay Module developed by A&T.

Slide#30
Slide#30
Here is the up-dated Road Map.
The project has started in 1999. We made the first presentation at LA2000 here in Palm Springs. We listed the draft of Open LA Standard. We have exhibited some of the prototype last year. And we plan to finish the development of basic modules in this year. And have a plan to launch the system in next year.

Slide#31
Slide#31
The project is still under preparation. But the goal, actually it is real starting point, will become closer. With facing the starting of marketing, 2 topics come arise to us. Total Quality Assurance & Customer Service. As same as analyzer we need to guaranty the performance of total system. And that requires the necessity of the authorized reagent or consumables. Also, Integrated Remote Maintenance by an appropriate organization will be required. Furthermore, we think that Automation System should be the Core System for Laboratory Information System. Or , at least it should strongly communicate with Laboratory Information System to provide the advanced information on Laboratory Testing. I am hoping that we could introduce you these concept in near future.

We are looking forward to have a contact not only from customer but also from American Manufacture.

Slide#33
Slide#33
At the end of my presentation. I would like to introduce you an exciting event of Laboratory Automation. The 3rd Cherry Blossom Symposium which will be held on April 3rd in Hamamatsu near to Mt.Fuji. Here is the homepage address of the Symposium. The address is listed on the back cover of JALA.
Thank you very much!
